The Ghana Police Service has assured Democracy Hub, the organizers of the ReOccupyJulorbiHouse protest, of their readiness to provide security for the event.
However, this assurance comes with a caveat — the picketing cannot take place at the proposed Revolution Square location after an Accra High Court has placed an injunction on the protest at the proposed venue.
According to a press statement issued by the Police on September 19th, 2024, their decision to deny permission for the protest at Revolution Square stems from security concerns.
In their assessment, holding the demonstration at the chosen site, in front of the Jubilee House, could compromise public order, safety, and health.
Despite efforts by the Police to suggest an alternative location, the Democracy Hub organizers insisted on the Revolution Square site.
This led the Police to seek a court ruling on the matter.
On September 18th, 2024, the High Court of Ghana granted an order prohibiting the protest at the proposed location.
While the Police emphasized that they are not preventing Democracy Hub from holding their protest, they remain firm on the location issue.
The statement highlights that security measures have been put in place to support the demonstration at a new location, yet to be agreed upon by both parties.
