Organized Labour in Ghana has announced a nationwide strike, set to begin on October 10, 2024, following the failure of the government to meet their demands concerning illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey.”
In a press statement issued after an emergency meeting held on October 1, 2024, leaders of the various labour unions expressed their disappointment over the government’s inaction after the expiration of a previous deadline.
The labour unions emphasized their concerns about the impact of illegal mining on communities, the environment, and the economy, highlighting that despite numerous engagements with the government, no concrete actions had been taken to curb the problem.
As a result, Organized Labour has resolved to take drastic measures to press home their demands. The strike, starting on Thursday, October 10, 2024, will involve workers from various sectors across the country staying at home until the government accedes to their demands.
The statement concluded by urging all workers to support the strike and remain at home, as the unions push for a resolution to the critical issue of illegal mining.
This development is likely to cause significant disruptions nationwide, with workers from key sectors expected to participate in the strike, bringing various industries to a standstill.
The government is yet to respond to this announcement, and Ghanaians will be watching closely as the situation unfolds.
