Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has revealed that only five percent of health facilities in Ghana have all the medical equipment needed to provide quality healthcare.

The minister said the shortage of essential equipment remains one of the biggest challenges in the health sector, affecting hospitals, clinics and primary healthcare centres across the country.

He made this known after visiting the Mother and Child Hospital in Kasoa to assess healthcare infrastructure and service delivery.

Speaking to the media after the tour, Mr Akandoh said many facilities are struggling to operate effectively because of inadequate equipment.

He described the poor state of medical equipment in the country as a major issue inherited by the current government.

“The equipment status in this country is very poor, and that is what I inherited,” he said.

Mr Akandoh noted that the government has started purchasing and distributing medical and hospital equipment to facilities nationwide.

He explained that although the problem cannot be solved immediately, efforts are underway to improve conditions, especially at the primary healthcare level.

According to him, official data available to the ministry shows that only five percent of health facilities currently have the full set of equipment required to function efficiently.
