US Olympic skateboarder Nyjah Huston has expressed disappointment over the quality of the Paris 2024 medals after noticing that his bronze medal has started to deteriorate.
Huston, who placed third in the men’s street skateboarding final on July 29, shared on Instagram that just a week later, his medal appeared to chip and lose its color.
“These Olympic medals look great when they’re brand new, but after wearing it with some sweat and letting friends wear it over the weekend, it seems they aren’t as high-quality as you’d expect,” Huston said, showing his followers the visible damage.
Designed by Parisian jeweler Chaumet, the medals feature a hexagonal token made from iron from the Eiffel Tower on one side and the Greek goddess of victory on the other. Huston’s bronze medal weighs 525g and is crafted from a copper, tin, and zinc alloy.
However, he suggested that these medals might be better suited for display than for regular wear. “I guess the medals are meant to be in cases,” he added.
