The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced its readiness to begin the rollout of the free dialysis treatment program for all patients.
This announcement follows the successful implementation and completion of the phase one of the program which provided free dialysis for patients aged 60 and above as well as patients below 18.
This initiative aims to provide relief to many Ghanaians who cannot afford the cost of dialysis. Currently, the cost of dialysis in the country ranges between GHC300 and GHC1,000, and available data suggests that between 4 million and 5.2 million citizens have some form of renal function impairment.
Speaking to the media after a closed door meeting with stakeholders, the Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, Dr. Dacosta Aboagye highlighted the readiness of the NHIA and the Ministry to ensure the successful implementation of the policy as well as it’s sustainablity.
“We have currently listed about 40 of these centres that our patients would have to go to. We are ready to begin the rollout of the program beginning December 1st 2024” he said.
He also stated that the NHIA and the Ministry of Heath in collaboration with the World Bank are procuring dialysis equipment for facilities in the country.
Dr. Dacosta further noted that all agenda 111 hospitals, when completed, will have dialysis equipment installed to provide for patients within the communities to avoid long distance travel for treatment.
The KorleBu Teaching Hospital and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital has also declared their readiness to begin the rollout of the program on December 1, 2024.
