Ghana midfielder Mohammed Kudus has opened up about the inspiration behind his distinctive goal celebration after scoring against Brighton for West Ham.
Known for his ‘take a seat’ gesture, Kudus decided to add a special touch to his celebration when he netted the equaliser at the London Olympic Stadium on Saturday.
Instead of the usual celebration, the former Ajax player unveiled a traditionally crafted elephant stool to mark the occasion.
Explaining the significance of the gesture, Kudus shared that he wanted to do something different to represent his homeland, Ghana.
“The stool is from Ghana,” he explained after the match. “With my celebration on the boards, a lot of people are copying it now, so I had to do something to stand out and showcase Ghana.”
He also added that the elephant is a symbol of traditional authority in his country.
