The Minority in Parliament has rejected allegations that it paid or coached some Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa to criticise the government over the repatriation exercise and the payment of allowances.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, October 27, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, denied any attempt by the Caucus to influence the returnees.
“Let me place on record that at no point in time did the Minority engage, pay, and/or convince any of these people,” he said.
His response follows claims by some evacuees at a press conference on Monday, October 26, that opposition figures had attempted to coach them to speak against the government.
Mr Jinapor explained that the concerns raised by the returnees related to alleged differences between the financial assistance they expected and the amounts they reportedly received.
The Minority has also questioned the financial records for the evacuation exercise, citing alleged duplicate entries, unsigned payment documents, missing receipts and claims by some returnees that they received less than the amounts recorded against their names.
