President John Dramani Mahama has called for an immediate investigation into the tragic deaths of eight Ghanaians during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
In a letter addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the former President stressed the importance of justice for the victims and their families, calling the incidents a significant blemish on Ghana’s democratic process.
The letter, signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, underscored the need for transparency and accountability in addressing these deaths.
The letter outlined several measures to ensure a thorough and credible investigation:
1.Formation of a Dedicated Investigative Taskforce within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to focus exclusively on the cases.
2.Collaboration with Witnesses and Families and other relevant individuals to gather critical evidence.
3.Review of Electoral Security Arrangements of security personnel deployed at the affected polling stations to determine potential involvement or oversight.
4.Use of Forensic Evidence to analyze bullet casings, weapons, and other materials from the crime scenes.
5.Collaboration with Electoral and Civic Bodies and other relevant agencies to review reports from the 2020 and 2024 elections.
The letter also requested periodic updates from the Ghana Police Service to ensure public trust and transparency in the investigative process.
