Leicester City Football Club have announced the permanent signing of talented young winger Abdul Fatawu from Sporting Lisbon, marking a significant move ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.
Following the activation of an option to buy from the Portuguese champions, full league and international clearance for the transfer has been secured, effective from July 1.
The 20-year-old Ghana international impressed during his loan spell at King Power Stadium last season, contributing to City’s Sky Bet Championship title win and promotion to the Premier League. Fatawu has now committed to a five-year contract with the Foxes.
Abdul Fatawu made 43 appearances for Leicester City across all competitions last season, showcasing his skills with seven goals, including a memorable hat-trick in a 5-0 victory against Southampton at Filbert Way.
His performances quickly endeared him to the Blue Army, becoming a fan favorite.
In a unique announcement, Leicester City collaborated with local band and devoted Foxes supporters, The Mercians.
They performed a special rendition of the Blue Army’s iconic Fatawu chant at King Power Stadium, surprising the winger and adding to the excitement of his permanent signing.
On his part, Fatawu expressed his joy saying “I feel amazing. It’s so good to be back and I’m just back to focus again for next season. I feel so much motivation to be in the Premier League.”
Abdul Fatawu began his senior career with Steadfast FC before moving to Dreams FC in the Ghanaian Premier Division.
His promising performances earned him a move to Sporting Lisbon( Portugal ) in April 2022, where he made his senior debut and featured in the UEFA Champions League.
Fatawu’s international accolades include helping Ghana’s Under-20 team win the Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations in March 2021, where he was named player of the tournament.
He has also represented Ghana at senior level, participating in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the Africa Cup of Nations.
