Organized Labour has declared a nationwide strike set to begin on Monday, July 15, 2024, in response to the proposed sale of 60% of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s (SSNIT) shares in four hotels.

This decisive action follows the recent announcement by the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, confirming that the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) had approved the sale.

The unions have expressed strong opposition to the sale, citing that it is not in the best interest of Ghanaian workers.

Their stance comes in response to the recent approval by the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) for the sale of SSNIT’s shares, a move that was disclosed by the Honourable Minister for Employment and Labour Relations in Parliament on 11th July 2024.

In their statement, the labour leaders recalled that on 28th June 2024, the NPRA Board had directed SSNIT to suspend negotiations with Rock City Hotel Ltd.

They find it “extremely difficult to understand” why the NPRA would reverse its stance and approve the sale, which they deem flawed.

The unions have demanded an immediate termination of the sale process, warning that failure to comply will result in a nationwide strike by all workers until the termination is publicly announced.
