The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, has reiterated the Ghana Police Service’s dedication to improving security at football stadiums after recent violent incidents.
During a crucial meeting with representatives from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), and Premier League clubs, the IGP discussed important strategies to address stadium violence.
This dialogue was prompted by the unfortunate death of Yaw Frimpong, a supporter of Asante Kotoko, who lost his life during a league match against Nsoatreman FC.
Dr. Akuffo-Dampare highlighted the importance of better coordination between the police and football governing bodies, resulting in the approval of 33 strategic measures to combat violence at stadiums.
Key initiatives include the appointment of Sports Security Officers in all 16 regions, the formation of a specialized Sports Policing Unit, and the incorporation of sports policing into police training.
Additionally, intelligence officers will be deployed to protect teams, and fan education programs will be ramped up to foster a safer football environment.
The IGP reassured all stakeholders of the police’s commitment to securing justice for Frimpong’s family and making football stadiums safer for everyone.
