Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has made a passionate appeal to delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging them to support his bid to remain the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Speaking at a meeting with delegates in the Sene East Constituency of the Bono East Region, Dr. Bawumia highlighted his unwavering dedication and sacrifices over the past 16 years as proof of his commitment to the party’s growth and success.
“These sacrifices could not have been made by someone who does not love the NPP or hold it in the highest regard,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia recounted key moments in his political journey, starting with his decision in 2008 to resign as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana to become Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s running mate—at a time when the party’s electoral prospects were widely doubted. He further recalled leaving a senior position at the African Development Bank in 2012, despite strong appeals from leadership there, to once again support the NPP through a difficult campaign season. That same year, he played a pivotal role as the party’s lead witness in the landmark election petition case.
“I have sacrificed for the party over the past 16 years,” he said. “Not even appeals from the head of the African Development Bank could convince me to stay. I resigned to support Nana Akufo-Addo and served the party diligently through thick and thin.”
Dr. Bawumia also pointed to his role in shaping major policy innovations under the Akufo-Addo administration, such as the Ghana Card rollout, Mobile Money Interoperability, and the Medical Drone Delivery Service, arguing that these initiatives reflect the impact he has made even within the constitutional limitations of the Vice Presidency.
Positioning himself as a candidate of both loyalty and results, Dr. Bawumia urged the party to continue building on the foundation laid during his years of service. He stated that his experience as running mate, Vice President, and flagbearer gives him the preparation necessary to lead the NPP back to power in 2028.
“I have been at the centre of this party’s progress for more than a decade. With your support, I’m ready to lead once more and bring the NPP back to government,” he told the delegates.
The NPP is expected to begin preparations for its next internal leadership contest following the 2024 elections, as it positions itself for a comeback in the next electoral cycle.
