The Government of Ghana has taken further steps to combat illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” by intensifying ongoing operations aimed at protecting the country’s rivers and forest reserves.
In a press release issued today by the Ministry of Information, the government emphasized its commitment to eradicating illegal mining activities through the continued deployment of “Operation Halt,” a task force led by the Ghana Armed Forces.
The new phase of the operation will be conducted in partnership with the Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana, reinforcing a collaborative approach in the fight against illegal mining.
As part of the renewed efforts, the government reaffirmed that river bodies and forest reserves are designated as “red zones” and remain off-limits for any mining activities, underscoring the importance of protecting the environment.
In the statement, the Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to ending illegal mining, calling on all stakeholders to join the national effort to preserve natural resources for future generations.
