Winfried Anton Schafer, an experienced German manager, has been named the Technical Advisor for the Ghana Black Stars and the Director of Football for the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Schafer, renowned for leading Cameroon to an African Cup of Nations victory in 2002, will work closely with Head Coach Otto Addo to help build a competitive and successful Black Stars team.

With a managerial career spanning over 40 years, Schafer has a wealth of experience at both national team and club levels.

He has managed national teams including Cameroon, Thailand, and Jamaica, while also coaching top European clubs like Borussia Monchengladbach, Karlsruher SC, VfB Stuttgart, and Borussia Berlin.

One of his standout achievements remains his 2002 African Cup of Nations triumph with Cameroon.

In addition to his work in Europe and Africa, Schafer has gained significant experience in the United Arab Emirates, having coached prominent clubs such as Al Ain, Al-Ahli Dubai, Baniyas, and Al-Khor, with his most recent coaching role being with Al Khor.

In his new position as Director of Football, Schafer will oversee football development in Ghana, collaborating with the GFA’s Technical Directorate to implement long-term strategic plans.

He will ensure that Ghana’s football philosophy is adhered to, provide technical guidance, and lead efforts in youth development while striving for consistent high performance across all teams.

Before coaching, Schafer enjoyed a successful playing career, spending 17 seasons in the German league system.

During this time, he played 438 matches and scored 62 goals, representing clubs such as Borussia Monchengladbach, Kickers Offenbach, and Karlsruher SC.
