Minister for Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has called on Ghanaians to remain alert to the threat of Ebola, emphasizing that there is currently no approved treatment or vaccine available to completely eliminate the disease.

Speaking on the need for increased public awareness, the minister stressed that early detection and prompt reporting of suspected cases remain critical in preventing the spread of the virus.

Ebola is a highly infectious disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans, particularly through contact with infected fruit bats and their waste. Human-to-human transmission can also occur through direct exposure to the blood, bodily fluids, or secretions of an infected person.

Mr. Akandoh highlighted the seriousness of the disease, noting that Ebola has one of the highest fatality rates among viral infections, with death rates ranging between 30 and 50 percent.

Speaking in an interview on Joy News on Tuesday, June 2, he said although researchers around the world continue to work toward developing effective vaccines and treatments, no definitive cure is currently available.

The minister compared the current situation to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, warning against complacency and urging both health authorities and the public to remain prepared.

According to him, creating widespread awareness is essential to ensuring that any suspected cases are identified and managed quickly to prevent outbreaks.

He further encouraged anyone experiencing symptoms associated with Ebola or who believes they may have been exposed to the virus to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility for assessment and care.
