In a landmark celebration of heritage and cultural connection, Dallas Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams has arrived in Ghana to kick off his first-ever NFL off-season cultural heritage tour.
The 26-year-old touched down at Kotoka International Airport over the weekend, where he received a warm welcome featuring a traditional cultural troupe and a royal VIP escort. This marks his first visit to the African continent.
Williams joins a growing number of American sports figures choosing Ghana as a preferred off-season destination. Eager to unwind and reconnect with his roots, he expressed his excitement to Ghanaian media:
“This is just great. I truly hope to recharge after a tough season, reconnect with my roots by enjoying all the great tourist options, and rebound for next season,” said the 2022 second-round NFL Draft pick.
The journey is organized by AfriConnect Travel Group LLC, a Dallas-based travel firm, in collaboration with its Ghanaian counterpart, Cation Ghana Ltd.
Williams is set to experience a week-long cultural immersion, beginning with a reflective pilgrimage to the Assin Manso Slave River.
The itinerary also includes historical tours of Cape Coast and Elmina Castles, with serene moments planned at Coconut Grove Resort.
Highlights of the trip include a scenic retreat to Akosombo for a royal durbar and traditional naming ceremony, along with adventurous water sports, boat cruises, and luxury accommodations at BridgeView Resort.
Back in Accra, Williams will visit select TV and radio stations to share his experiences and round off his stay with an AfriConnect Beach Extravaganza, golfing sessions, exclusive meet-and-greets, and a culinary city tour showcasing Accra’s rich food scene.
“This trip is about roots, reconnection, and celebration,” said Dr. Eb Eshun, CEO of AfriConnect Travel Group. “We are honored to guide Sam on this powerful journey through Ghana’s culture and history.”
Williams, who faced a significant ACL injury in 2024, is expected to make a strong comeback when the NFL resumes in September.
