The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has officially sworn in Bernard Bediako and Professor Alidu Seidu as new Members of Parliament, following by-elections in Akwatia and Tamale Central constituencies.
The brief ceremony took place on Tuesday as Parliament reconvened for its final session of the year in Accra. Speaker Bagbin administered the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Member of Parliament to the two newly elected legislators.
Bernard Bediako, representing the Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), replaces the late Ernest Yaw Kumi, who passed away in July this year.
Professor Alidu Seidu, also of the NDC, now represents the Tamale Central Constituency in the Northern Region, following the tragic death of the former MP, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in the recent military helicopter crash in August.
Speaker Bagbin, in his remarks, urged the new MPs to uphold their oath and remain committed to the principles of service, integrity, and national unity.
“You have sworn to serve not only your constituents but the nation. Let your work in this House reflect that solemn promise,” he said.
The swearing-in restores full representation for the two constituencies after weeks of mourning and by-election activities. Both MPs are expected to immediately assume their legislative duties as the House begins deliberations for the last sitting of the 2025 parliamentary calendar.
Bernard Bediako’s victory in Akwatia marked a notable shift in the constituency’s voting pattern, as the NDC reclaimed the seat from the New Patriotic Party (NPP). In Tamale Central, Professor Seidu was declared winner unopposed after other candidates withdrew from the race, leading the Electoral Commission to gazette his election in line with constitutional procedures.
Their induction also marginally strengthens the NDC’s side in the House as the political balance continues to shape key national debates ahead of the 2026 general elections.
