Fernandes backs Carrick after Man Utd’s Roma comeback

Bruno Fernandes insists Manchester United did not need to rescue their manager’s job after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Roma, but another big test awaits against Aston Villa.

Manchester United needed a response. Michael Carrick needed a result. And Bruno Fernandes delivered a performance that could change the mood around Old Trafford.

United came from two goals down to beat Roma 3-2 in a dramatic Champions League encounter, ending a nine-game winless run against the Italian side. A first victory in 54 days also brought some much-needed relief after weeks of pressure on Carrick.

The night looked set for another miserable chapter when Roma raced into a two-goal lead inside 18 minutes. Frustrated supporters responded with boos and protests, even throwing tennis balls onto the pitch as the home side struggled to find an answer.

But United refused to fold. Fernandes converted a penalty before Matheus Cunha struck twice late in the game to complete a remarkable turnaround and send the home crowd into celebration.

Fernandes was central to the revival, producing his strongest display of a difficult season. Yet the United captain was keen to make one thing clear after the final whistle: the players were not fighting to save their manager’s job.

“We don’t need to save anyone’s job,” he said in an interview after the game.

The Portugal international also addressed the tension surrounding his relationship with Carrick. He had questioned the manager’s tactics after a 4-1 defeat to Como and was subsequently dropped for the 3-0 loss to Bournemouth.

Fernandes accepted the decision, admitting Carrick was right to leave him out if his performances did not meet the required standard.

“If it was, it was right. The manager is the one who makes the decisions,” he added.

Carrick also refused to make the result about his future. Instead, he praised the players for showing character during a difficult period and acknowledged the importance of giving supporters something to celebrate.

“I’m proud of the players, and they deserve a lot of credit for pulling through that in a tough situation,” he said.

There were echoes of United’s famous 3-2 comeback against Newcastle in 2018 under Jose Mourinho. That victory briefly eased the pressure on the Portuguese manager, although he was eventually dismissed later that year.

Carrick now faces a similar test. United’s next meeting with Aston Villa could prove crucial, particularly with Unai Emery widely regarded as one of the leading managerial candidates should the Old Trafford job become available.

One comeback does not guarantee a revival. But another victory could give Carrick valuable breathing space and strengthen belief within the dressing room.
