US midterms: Trump faces congressional opposition after sweeping Democratic victory

23

Reports from the United States indicate that the Democratic Party is set to take control of both chambers of Congress following the November 3 midterm elections, in what could be a major setback for President Donald Trump and his Republican administration.

Major media organizations, including BBC News, have projected Democratic victories in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, following significant gains in several traditionally Republican strongholds.

The development could reshape the balance of political power in Washington and make it more difficult for President Trump to advance his legislative agenda during the remaining two years of his term.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives were contested, alongside 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats.

Among the notable results, Democrats recorded victories in traditionally Republican states, including Texas, Kansas, Ohio and South Carolina, securing important Senate seats.

The gains come amid growing voter concerns over the cost of living, immigration and the administration’s handling of the war involving the United States and Iran.

The midterm elections are held halfway through a president’s four-year term and are widely regarded as a measure of public confidence in the sitting administration.

With Democrats projected to control both chambers, the party is expected to gain significant oversight powers, including the ability to launch congressional investigations into the Trump administration and challenge some of its policy decisions.

The outcome could also complicate the president’s efforts to secure congressional approval for legislation, government spending and other major policy proposals.

President Trump had urged Republican supporters to treat the elections as a vote of confidence in his leadership.

However, the projected results suggest a significant shift in voter sentiment, presenting the president with a more challenging political environment as he approaches the final two years of his presidency.

The results are also expected to influence political calculations ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
