Jordan Ayew has a new chance in English football. Sheffield United signed the Ghana captain on a one-year deal. The 34-year-old joins as a free agent after his Leicester City contract ended.
The Blades confirmed the move on Tuesday. Ayew fills the last spot in Chris Wilder’s 25-man squad. He brings experience, versatility and leadership to the Championship side.
Ayew has made over 500 competitive appearances. His career took him from France to England. He captained Ghana at the 2026 World Cup and started all four games. Ghana reached the knockout stage. They drew 0-0 with England.
Wilder wants Ayew’s pedigree. “I spoke last week about being close to getting someone in from the free-agent market, and things did move quite quickly, so I am really pleased to have Jordan with us,” Wilder said. “We’re talking about someone here with bags of experience from right at the top level of the game. Only a few months ago he was captaining Ghana in the World Cup, so he’s someone with real pedigree.”
Ayew played well in the Championship last season under tough conditions. He can play across the front line. This gives Wilder more options. The manager points to past free agents like Patrick Bamford and Jaïro Riedewald. “We used the free market to great effect last season, and we believe Jordan can come in and have an impact here just like Pat and Jaïro did,” he said.
Ayew was in Ghana when Wilder called.
The club moved fast. “I’m really, really pleased to be here. The manager and the club made a great effort to get me here as quickly as possible, so I want to thank everyone for their support and for bringing me over to the Blades,” Ayew said. “Hopefully, we’ll have a great season.”
The move felt familiar. “It reminds me a bit of where I was a few years ago, and that was obviously Palace, so it’s a bit similar,” he explained. “I really like it, and I’m really looking forward to the season and getting to know more about the club as well.”
He did not hesitate. “It happened really, really quickly because I was in Ghana and the manager called me last week,” Ayew said. “I didn’t think twice; I just took the opportunity. The most important thing is for me to help the team and obviously for us to have a great season. I have a lot of desire this season to make an impact and to help the team because we have a good squad and there are a lot of positive things we can do.”
Ayew started at Marseille. He also played for Sochaux and Lorient. In England he featured for Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester. At 34 he offers smarts and know-how more than raw pace. Sheffield United give him a platform. He must turn that experience into results for the Blades this season.
