The strategic partnership between MTN Ghana and the University of Ghana is designed to move beyond ceremonial collaboration. For students, young developers, designers and technology enthusiasts, it opens several ppathways to build experience, test ideas and connect academic work with the realities of industry.
1. Direct exposure to industry and career pathways
The agreement creates possibilities for internships, National Service placements, industry visits, masterclasses and direct interaction with working professionals. That exposure can help students understand how concepts learned in class perform at scale—where customer expectations, cybersecurity, large datasets and operational complexity become part of the problem.
For participants, this is a chance to build stronger portfolios, learn workplace standards and develop professional networks before graduation. It also gives employers a closer view of emerging talent and the skills being developed at the University.
2. A platform to build inclusive, real-world solutions
The Tɛkyerɛma Pa Hackathon invites teams to create digital solutions that support communication in Ghanaian languages and remain accessible to persons with disabilities. The challenge stretches across AI and language technologies, fintech and digital services, accessibility and personalisation, UX/UI, computer vision and agentic AI.
This gives innovators an opportunity to work on problems with clear social and commercial relevance—from local-language digital payments and healthcare communication to education, translation, public services and assistive technologies. Crucially, teams are expected to design with intended users, not merely for them.

3. Mentorship, research collaboration and knowledge exchange
The MoU provides for guest lectures, digital and AI skills development, joint research, innovation challenges and knowledge exchange. The 2026 Hackathon alone lists 30 mentors drawn from research, engineering, entrepreneurship, disability studies, product development, fintech, cybersecurity and user-centred design.
Students and independent tech enthusiasts can therefore gain feedback from people who understand both technical development and the conditions required to move a prototype towards a useful, scalable product. For researchers, the partnership could also create stronger links between academic inquiry and industry data, challenges and deployment environments.
4. Recognition, equipment and funding to advance promising work
The collaboration introduces annual Digital Excellence Awards for the best graduating Computer Science student, best graduating female Computer Science student and best AI graduating project. Each winner is expected to receive a cash award and a laptop.
Hackathon finalists also compete for GH₵100,000 in the three main cash prizes, led by a GH₵70,000 first prize, as well as specialist awards for digital experience, financial inclusion, female-led teams and agentic AI. Together, these incentives can provide visibility, validation and early resources for strong ideas and promising talent.
The bigger opportunity
The long-term promise of the MTN Ghana–University of Ghana partnership is a more reliable bridge between learning, research, employment and enterprise. Its success will depend on what follows the signing: meaningful placements, sustained mentoring, research that addresses real needs and innovations that reach the people for whom they were designed.
For students and technology enthusiasts, the message is straightforward: this is an invitation to move from understanding technology to building with it—and to create products that reflect Ghana’s languages, communities and development priorities.
