The Central Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with a violent attack and rioting at New Winneba in the Central Region.
The suspects have been identified as Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tualsi, 19; Samuel Gyesi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22. According to the Police, the six are currently in custody assisting with investigations.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at about 10:40 a.m., when a mob of about 300 people, allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks, stormed New Winneba Township.
The Police said the mob came from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, attacking residents and causing damage to shops, homes and other properties.
 
About 15 people sustained injuries during the attack and were sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment. One of the injured persons is a police officer.
Three people were also confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty.
Police personnel retrieved a locally manufactured single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge from the scene.
The Police Command has since deployed personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters, Agona Swedru Division and Mankessim Division, alongside the IGP’S SPECIAL TEAM, to reinforce security in the area. Two armoured vehicles from the Police National Headquarters have also been deployed.
The Police say six snap checkpoints have been mounted in the area, while day and night patrols have been intensified. PID AND CID PERSONNEL have also been deployed to monitor the situation.
The Police say the area is currently calm and the situation is under control, with all six suspects in custody assisting with investigations.
