Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has indicated that the government is open to the idea of Ghana having a National Cathedral.
He says, however, that there must be broad agreement among Christian groups on key issues, particularly the location of the facility and how its construction will be funded.
Mr. Ayariga made this known during a meeting with the leadership of the Christian Council of Ghana, where he encouraged the various Christian denominations to come together and discuss the project.
He suggested that representatives of the Catholic Church, Protestant churches and other Christian organisations should engage in consultations to develop a unified position on the proposed Cathedral.
The Minister said the discussions should consider the financial requirements of the project, a suitable location and a clear funding arrangement before the matter is presented to President John Dramani Mahama
He explained that the concerns previously raised by the NDC were not necessarily against the establishment of a National Cathedral, but rather related to questions surrounding its location and funding.
Mr. Ayariga expressed confidence that if Christian leaders work together, they could mobilise the resources needed to complete the project.
He pointed to the National Mosque as an example of how cooperation among religious groups and support from outside the country can contribute to financing major religious projects.
He therefore urged Christian leaders to put aside their differences, reach a common position and present their recommendations to the President for further direction.
