Accra, Ghana — August 25, 2026: Ghana’s conversation around marriage governance is set to take another significant step forward as the Marriage Governance Conference 2026 (MGC26) brings together legal professionals, policymakers, civil society actors, religious and traditional leaders, academics, marriage practitioners and members of the public to examine the evolving landscape of marriage in Ghana.
The conference, organised by MarryRight Ghana, will take place on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at 4:00 PM at the GIMPA Law School in Accra.
A major highlight of this year’s conference will be the official launch of Marrify, a digital platform designed to make the submission and verification of marriage records more accessible, transparent and efficient.
The launch comes at a time when questions surrounding the validity, registration and verification of marriages continue to have significant legal and social implications for individuals and families across Ghana.
According to MarryRight Ghana, Marrify is designed to help address some of these challenges by supporting the documentation of marriage records and enabling individuals to verify important information about marital status. The platform also seeks to promote greater transparency around the churches, venues and marriage officers authorised to celebrate legally recognised marriages.
This is particularly important given the risks associated with marriages conducted by unlicensed or unauthorised persons. Such unions can create serious complications around property rights, inheritance, divorce, child custody and other legal protections.
The Marriage Governance Conference has emerged as an important platform for examining these issues. Previous editions have brought together stakeholders from the judiciary, legal profession, government, religious institutions, academia and civil society to debate some of the most pressing questions surrounding marriage law and practice in Ghana.
The 2025 edition, for example, examined issues ranging from the legal recognition of customary and Islamic marriages to cohabitation, marriage documentation, spousal rights, child support and disputes surrounding burial and family rights.
MGC26 will build on this growing national conversation, with a particular emphasis on the role technology can play in strengthening transparency, accountability and public access to reliable marriage information.
The conference also comes against the backdrop of continuing calls for improvements in Ghana’s marriage registration and governance systems. Stakeholders have previously raised concerns about gaps in the registration of certain categories of marriages, the licensing of marriage officers and public awareness of the legal requirements surrounding valid marriages.
For MarryRight Ghana, the objective is not simply to promote compliance with the law, but to empower individuals with the information they need to make informed decisions before and during marriage.
The organisation describes its broader mission as promoting the legal way of getting married in accordance with Ghana’s Marriage Act, while encouraging greater awareness of the rights and responsibilities that accompany marriage.
The Marriage Governance Conference 2026 therefore offers an opportunity for the public to participate in a timely national conversation about how Ghana can build a marriage governance system that is more transparent, accessible, legally sound and responsive to the realities of modern society.
