As part of MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary celebrations, 500 tertiary students and teachers have been awarded scholarship support under its Bright Scholarship Scheme with each beneficiary receiving assistance covering tuition, accommodation, a laptop and a stipend.
The beneficiaries comprise 300 tertiary students and 200 teachers pursuing programmes in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), as well as vocational and technical fields.
The awards were presented at a ceremony in Accra on Friday as part of activities marking MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary.
Speaking at the event, MTN Ghana Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Blewett, said the initiative was intended to ensure that financial difficulties did not prevent talented individuals from achieving their educational goals.
“By removing financial barriers, it creates the means for deserving students to pursue their ambitions and realise their full potential,” he said, referring to the importance of scholarship programmes.
Mr Blewett said the selection process attracted 5,194 applications, with 1,200 applicants interviewed before 500 were chosen. The final list included 14 persons with disabilities.
He noted that the scheme, introduced in 2018, had supported 1,220 beneficiaries over the years, including 17 valedictorians and 299 graduates who obtained first-class honours.
Mr Blewett encouraged the new beneficiaries to remain committed to their studies and use their education to address challenges in their communities.
He also urged them to use technology responsibly, while calling on teachers receiving the awards to apply the knowledge and skills acquired to improve classroom instruction and learning outcomes.
The MTN Bright Scholarship Scheme is among the company’s educational support initiatives aimed at expanding access to higher education and strengthening skills development in Ghana.
