Ghana coach Chris Hughton has justified Andre Ayew’s inclusion in his squad to face the Central African Republic on Thursday.
Many Ghanaians reacted to the inclusion of the Black Stars skipper in the 25-man roster for the final Group E AFCON qualifier.
Ayew is currently without a club following the expiration of his contract at Nottingham Forest, however, Hughton insists that he remains in the team because he knows what the 33-year-old brings to the table.
“What I have to do is to pick a squad that is made up of young exciting players and much more experienced players,” Hughton told Asaase Radio.
“There will always be, in the general public, a lot of debate about who should be in the squad and who shouldn’t.
“We are knowledgeable about the amount of games that he has played and we also know what he means to the squad. He is out captain; I know what he gives the squad.”
The Black Stars will host Central Africa Republic on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
