Arsenal fire up title defense with Coventry rout

Arsenal could hardly have asked for a better start to their Premier League title defense. A dominant 3-0 win over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates sent another warning to their rivals.

The Gunners had already beaten Manchester City in the Community Shield. They now look ready for another long title fight under Mikel Arteta.

Christos Tzolis was at the centre of Arsenal’s best work. The new signing helped create the first two goals and looked dangerous throughout his Premier League debut.

His first key moment came when he won the ball back for Riccardo Calafiori. Calafiori then set up Kai Havertz for the opener, before Tzolis created the second with a cross that Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth turned into Bukayo Saka’s path.

Coventry struggled to cope with Arsenal’s speed and movement. They did not have a touch in Arsenal’s penalty area or make a tackle in the first half, the first of such Premier League record since 2007.

Martin Odegaard added the third just four minutes after the break. Arsenal controlled the game through Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly, while Saka, Odegaard and Ben White again showed their understanding on the right.

“There was a lot to like,” Arteta said after the game. “We were really dominant and flowed with the ball.”

The victory also marked Arteta’s 150th Premier League win as Arsenal manager. He reached the milestone in 249 games, joining an elite group that includes Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Odegaard felt Arsenal could still improve. “We looked good. We could have created and scored more,” he said.

For Frank Lampard’s Coventry, the night was a harsh return to the top flight after 25 years away. “It was a big learning curve,” Lampard admitted.

Arsenal will now face tougher tests against Aston Villa and Chelsea. But after two impressive wins, the message is clear: the Gunners are already firing on all cylinders.
