Ipswich Town have strengthened their squad ahead of the new Premier League season with the signing of Ghana international Abdul Fatawu from Leicester City. The exciting winger arrives on a five year deal until 2031, bringing top flight experience, Champions League pedigree, and the ambition to help the Blues take the next step under Gary O’Neil.
At just 22, Fatawu already has a career many players would envy. From the streets of Tamale to the biggest stages in European and international football, the winger has built a reputation as one of Ghana’s brightest attacking talents.
His journey has been anything but ordinary. After starting with Steadfast and impressing during a loan spell at Dreams FC, he earned a move to Sporting in Portugal, where he gained valuable Champions League experience before joining Leicester City.
Fatawu quickly became a fan favourite at the King Power Stadium. He played a major role in Leicester’s Championship winning campaign in 2023 and 2024, collected the club’s Young Player of the Year award, and returned from an injury affected Premier League season to score nine goals in 44 appearances last term.
His performances have also made him a key figure for Ghana. The winger featured in all four of the Black Stars’ matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and now has 32 senior caps and three international goals after first bursting onto the scene as Player of the Tournament at the 2021 Under 20 Africa Cup of Nations.
“I am proud to have signed for Ipswich Town,” Fatawu said. “The ambition the club has is very exciting and I’m looking forward to being a part of that as we prepare for the Premier League season.”
He added, “I have played against Ipswich a few times during my time in England and I know how passionate the supporters are for the club, so I’m excited to play for them and show them what I can do.”
Ipswich manager Gary O’Neil believes the club have secured a player capable of making an immediate impact. “Abdul is a young player who has already gained good experience in the game and we’re excited to have him with us,” he said.
“He has strong physical and technical attributes, is comfortable on the ball and can test the opposition in one on one situations, so will provide us with good options within the squad.”
With pre season preparations continuing in La Manga, Ipswich have added more than just another winger. They have secured a fearless attacker entering his prime, and supporters will hope Fatawu’s pace and creativity can help the club make their mark back in the Premier League.
