Colombia denied late winner but finish above Portugal

Colombia left Miami with mixed emotions. A controversial late offside call denied them a famous victory over Portugal, but a spirited 0-0 draw was still enough to secure top spot in Group K and book a last 32 clash with Ghana.

The final whistle sparked relief rather than celebration for Nestor Lorenzo’s side. They had outplayed one of Europe’s strongest teams, yet the scoreline failed to reflect their dominance after Davinson Sanchez’s late header was ruled out by the narrowest of margins.

The decision became the game’s biggest talking point. VAR confirmed Sanchez was offside by the tip of his boot before he headed past Diogo Costa, prompting loud boos around the stadium and fierce debate among pundits.

Fortunately for Colombia, the decision did not change the standings. A point was enough to finish above Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, who needed victory to claim first place.

The South Americans looked the more dangerous side from the opening whistle. Jhon Cordoba threatened early, while Richard Rios and Gustavo Puerta kept Portugal under pressure throughout an entertaining contest. Luis Suarez also missed a golden chance before Sanchez thought he had won it at the death.

Portugal had their moments. Camilo Vargas produced an outstanding save to deny Bruno Fernandes, while Rafael Leao came close to stealing victory late on. Ronaldo, however, struggled to influence the contest after scoring twice in his previous outing against Uzbekistan.

Colombia manager Nestor Lorenzo praised his players after the match. “Colombia played a great game from start to finish. We deserved to win, we created so many chances, we lacked finishing. I want to congratulate the boys for the effort they put in because they were outstanding.”

He also joked that Sanchez might need a visit to a podologist before the next match after his boot cost Colombia a memorable winner.

Portugal boss Roberto Martinez admitted his side never found their rhythm. “We gave Colombia the match they wanted. We needed to win, but we have to respect Colombia. They’re a top-tier team.”

Attention now turns to Kansas City, where Colombia will meet Ghana and former coach Carlos Queiroz. Portugal, meanwhile, face Croatia knowing tougher tests lie ahead. If this gripping goalless draw is any indication, Colombia have every reason to believe their World Cup journey is only gathering momentum.
