The Minister for Local Government, Ahmed Ibrahim, has revealed that all 9,090 assembly members across the country received monthly allowances of more than GH₵1,000 between April and December 2025, describing the move as a major step toward recognising and motivating grassroots leadership.

According to the Minister, the payments followed a directive by President John Dramani Mahama, who approved a monthly allowance of GH₵1,300 for each assembly member as part of efforts to strengthen local governance.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, April 20, Mr. Ibrahim explained that although the approved amount was GH₵1,300, statutory deductions, including taxes, resulted in assembly members receiving slightly above GH₵1,000 monthly.

Mr. Ibrahim noted that since Ghana began practising decentralisation in 1988, assembly members have largely operated without formal financial support, despite their critical role in governance at the local level.

He described the introduction of the allowance as a turning point, particularly under the leadership of President Mahama, whom he credited with recognising the importance of empowering local government actors.

“All the 9,090 assembly members were paid GH₵1,300, and after tax deductions, each received more than GH₵1,000 for every month from April to December 2025,” he stated.

The Minister further disclosed that government is preparing to pay allowances for the first quarter of 2026, signalling continuity of the policy.

He expressed confidence that the initiative will be sustained, adding that the successful implementation in 2025 demonstrates government’s commitment to ensuring assembly members remain motivated to effectively carry out their responsibilities.

The introduction of monthly allowances is expected to enhance the performance of assembly members, who serve as a crucial link between local communities and government.
