The National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASWAPAP) has agreed to maintain current sachet water prices following a crucial meeting with the Ministry of Trade Agribusiness and Industry.

The decision comes after earlier signals of a possible price hike that had sparked concern among consumers across the country.

Producers had cited rising production costs—including raw materials, fuel, and utilities—as the basis for the proposed increment. In particular, the cost of polymers, a key input in sachet water production, has risen sharply from $920 to $1,200 per tonne, partly linked to disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz amid global tensions.

The planned increase, which was expected to take effect this week, would have significantly raised the retail price of sachet water, a major source of drinking water for many Ghanaians.

However, following engagements with government officials on April 8, led by the Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Minister, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, producers agreed to suspend the increment and keep prices unchanged for the time being.

President of the Association, Ebo Botwe, said the decision, though costly, was necessary in the interest of consumers.

“We have agreed to maintain the prices at the old one for about two to three months. We will monitor the situation and, if there is the need for a change, we will communicate,” he stated.

Government has assured stakeholders that discussions will continue to identify sustainable solutions that balance rising production costs with consumer protection.

Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare commended the producers for their decision, noting that recent economic stability had helped cushion the industry.

“The economy has been stable for a while now, and these producers were cushioned. If they have extended that support by maintaining prices, we commend them and promise to support them in the face of any shocks,” she said.

Despite holding prices steady for now, producers maintain that underlying challenges persist, stressing the need for continued dialogue to determine any future adjustments.
