The Ghana Police Service has pledged a comprehensive investigation into allegations by renowned artist Ibrahim Mahama that he was assaulted by officers in Tamale.
The assurance follows a meeting between Mr. Mahama and the Inspector General of Police, alongside the Police Management Board, after the reported incident on March 21.
Speaking after the engagement, Director-General of Public Affairs, Grace Ansah-Akrofi, said the IGP had listened to the artist’s account and reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to uncovering the facts.
She disclosed that investigations had already begun shortly after the matter came to the attention of the police, with both criminal and professional conduct inquiries running concurrently.
According to her, initial steps taken at the regional level include taking statements from Mr. Mahama and his team, visiting the alleged scene, and engaging him at his residence.
She added that the case has now been escalated to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to ensure a more thorough probe, while the Police Professional Standards Bureau has been directed to fast-track its work.
The Police Service also assured Mr. Mahama of its full cooperation throughout the process, stressing that any officer found culpable will face the law.
DCOP Ansah-Akrofi further called for calm, assuring the public that updates will be provided as investigations progress.
