The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has confirmed that the Ghana Police Service has launched investigations into reports that an American visitor was allegedly kidnapped and extorted by individuals purported to be police officers.

In a press statement dated December 8, 2025, the GTA said both the Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority are treating the matter with urgency and will issue further updates once investigations are concluded.

The Authority reassured the public—especially international visitors—that Ghana remains a safe and reliable destination.

“Our security systems… supported by national law enforcement and tourism sector partners, have been reinforced to guarantee the safety, comfort and peace of mind of all visitors throughout the festive season… Ghana remains open, secure, and welcoming. Visitors should have full confidence in their safety,” the statement emphasized.

The reassurance comes in response to a viral video in which an American woman, visiting Ghana for the Detty December festivities, claimed she was stopped by men in police uniforms who allegedly extorted about $400 from her. The video sparked swift public concern and attracted international attention.

The GTA encouraged tourists in need of assistance or information to contact the Authority via 0579579019 or 030 700 7100, or send a WhatsApp message to 0546352240.

Authorities maintain that investigations are ongoing and have urged the public to remain calm as security agencies work to establish the facts and ensure accountability.
