The Ministry of the Interior has launched two separate investigations following allegations that Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng survived two assassination attempts and that a senior official of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) was assaulted by police officers.

The claims were first made public on December 6 by Samuel Appiah Darko, the OSP’s Director of Strategy, Research and Communications, during an appearance on the Newsfile programme in Accra. Darko alleged that Mr. Agyebeng had been targeted in two failed assassination attempts while carrying out his official duties. He also claimed that he himself had been handcuffed and beaten by 17 police personnel.

In a press statement issued on Monday, December 8, the Interior Ministry noted that the allegations carry significant national security implications and could undermine government efforts to strengthen anti-corruption initiatives. The Ministry said it has therefore begun preliminary checks.

According to the statement, initial engagement with Mr. Agyebeng indicated that the alleged assassination attempts occurred before 2025. It added that security agencies and police stations nationwide had no record of any threat reports filed by the Special Prosecutor.

Given the seriousness of the allegations, the Interior Minister has directed a full-scale investigation into both matters. The first probe will focus on the reported assassination attempts on Mr. Agyebeng, with the Ministry stressing that such crimes do not lapse with time. A second inquiry will examine Mr. Appiah Darko’s claim that he was assaulted by multiple police officers.

The Ministry assured the public that the findings will be made public upon completion of the investigations. It reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all individuals in the country, emphasising that every Ghanaian should be able to go about their lawful activities without fear.
