The Eastern Regional Minister and Chairperson of the Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Rita Akosua Awatey, has assured residents of Kukurantumi in the Abuakwa North Municipality of a fair and transparent investigation into the death of a suspect in police custody and the violent attacks that followed on the Kukurantumi Police Station.
The Minister visited the community to assess the damage caused during the unrest and held engagements with youth groups and opinion leaders.
She called for calm and urged residents to allow due process to take its course.
As part of her visit, Madam Awatey also called on the family of the deceased to offer her condolences.
She reaffirmed government’s commitment to using all legal and legitimate means to ensure justice is served.
In the wake of the disturbances, the Eastern Regional Police Command has temporarily closed down the Kukurantumi Police Station and withdrawn personnel from the area as a precautionary measure.
