The Minority Caucus in Parliament has donated CFA 2 million to Ghanaian refugees seeking shelter in Vonkoro, a community in Côte d’Ivoire’s Bouna Region.
The donation comes after violent clashes in the Savannah Region led to the deaths of more than 40 people and displaced over 40,000, with about 13,000 fleeing across the border. Over 8,000 of the displaced have since returned to Ghana.
Presenting the donation, Nana Asafo-Adjei-Ayeh, leader of a four-member parliamentary delegation, said the gesture was to bring relief to the victims and reaffirm solidarity with them in their difficult moment.
“We empathise with you and assure you of our support. It is our hope that a permanent solution will be found so you can return home soon,” he said.
Receiving the cash donation on behalf of the refugees, Kawuro Kwasi David, Assemblyman for the Bale Electoral Area, expressed gratitude, saying the support would go a long way in easing their struggles.
The refugees welcomed the visit, stressing that they were hopeful the Minority’s advocacy would pressure government to accelerate efforts for their safe return.
