Red Cards for Transfers: The moves that failed on deadline day

From Guehi’s failed Liverpool switch to Martinez’s Man Utd heartbreak, we look at the biggest transfers that collapsed on Deadline Day.

Transfer Deadline Day delivered its usual fireworks, but behind the headlines of Alexander Isak’s record move to Liverpool and Yoane Wissa’s switch to Newcastle lay stories of frustration and collapse. For every completed signing, there was another deal that never crossed the line.

The Premier League’s final hours were fast, frantic, and unforgiving. By 7pm, the window slammed shut with a record number of deal sheets submitted. Yet several high-profile moves fell apart in dramatic fashion, leaving players stranded and clubs scrambling for answers.

Marc Guehi

The biggest near-miss came with Marc Guehi. Liverpool thought they had their man, with a fee agreed, a deal sheet filed, and even a Palace farewell video leaked online. But Palace stalled after failing to land defensive cover, and manager Oliver Glasner reportedly threatened to walk if Guehi was sold. Now, the 25-year-old stays put, but with just one year left on his contract, he could leave for nothing next summer.

Emi Martinez

Another saga unfolded at Manchester United. Emi Martinez was eager to trade Aston Villa for Old Trafford, and United wanted an experienced keeper. But in a surprise twist, they turned to 23-year-old Senne Lammens from Antwerp instead. Martinez, under contract until 2029, must now rebuild trust at Villa after Unai Emery admitted he lacked “100% focus” during the saga.

Raheem Sterling

Chelsea, meanwhile, failed to move on Raheem Sterling. Once a marquee arrival, Sterling has slipped down the pecking order, training away from the first team and unwanted by new boss Enzo Maresca. Linked with Fulham until the very last day, the deal collapsed, leaving Chelsea burdened with their highest-paid player in limbo.

Ademola Lookman’s case was even more turbulent. The Atalanta winger handed in a transfer request, skipped training, and accused the club of blocking his exit. Inter, Bayern Munich, and Tottenham all circled, but no bid was accepted. Fans in Bergamo, furious at his strike, demanded he “honour the shirt.” His only options now lie in Turkey or Saudi Arabia, where windows remain open.

Liverpool’s defensive puzzle also cost Joe Gomez a move. AC Milan had an agreement ready, but with Guehi unavailable, Liverpool refused to sanction the sale. It may prove a blessing for Jurgen Klopp’s successor Arne Slot, who only days earlier praised Gomez for an “outstanding” display against Arsenal. Captain Virgil van Dijk also voiced his desire for his defensive partner to stay.

Elsewhere, Fulham did not have enough time to complete Tyrique George’s £22m switch to the Cottage from neighbor’s Chelsea and Leeds saw hopes of landing Harry Wilson dashed when Fulham prioritized incomings instead.

In the end, Deadline Day was as much about failure as success. For every player who secured a dream move, another was left facing awkward questions and uncertain futures.
