A high-level delegation from Mombasa County, Kenya, led by Governor H.E. Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir, has visited Zoomlion Ghana Limited and other subsidiaries of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC) to learn from Ghana’s innovative waste management systems.

The 26-member delegation, which included Members of Parliament, technical experts, and administrative officials, embarked on a four-day study tour from July 29 to August 1, aimed at exploring potential collaboration and replicating JGC’s sanitation module in Kenya.

The visit follows a reciprocal engagement after JGC Executive Chairman, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, toured Kenya in July to promote a Pan-African approach to sanitation challenges through innovation and sustainable solutions.

Tour Highlights

The Kenyan delegation toured key waste management and recycling facilities in Accra and Kumasi, including:

Sewerage Systems Ghana Limited (SSGL)

Zoomlion Transfer Station, Pantang

Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP)

Kpone Landfill Site

Universal Plastic Product and Recycling Plant (UPPR)

Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant (KCARP)

Medical Waste Treatment Facility

Kumasi Waste Water Treatment Plant

The team was particularly impressed by the Jospong Group’s ability to transform waste into economic and social opportunities, empowering local communities, especially youth, through job creation.

Shared Vision for Waste Management

Governor Nassir outlined Mombasa’s evolving waste management strategy, which includes dividing the city into 600 zones and employing young people for waste collection, transport, and sorting. He emphasized the need for a formal system to combat past challenges such as haphazard disposal and control by illegal cartels.

“We are ready to adopt Jospong’s waste blueprint to help us tackle our solid waste, sewerage, and medical waste problems,” he said. “We’re shifting to a model where waste becomes a resource, not a burden.”

The Governor expressed gratitude to Dr. Agyepong for his commitment and pledged continued collaboration, especially ahead of Kenya’s upcoming Devolution Conference.

A Pan-African Model

Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong reiterated the Jospong Group’s readiness to work closely with Mombasa County to adapt and implement sustainable solutions.

“We’re committed to supporting local talent, sharing expertise, and ensuring the transfer of knowledge so that these facilities can be operated independently by the local community,” he said. “Our team will conduct feasibility studies and provide technical support every step of the way.”

Dr. Agyepong emphasized the importance of African-led partnerships in building long-term environmental solutions that also drive youth employment and economic empowerment.

Strong Support from Kenyan Officials

Several Kenyan officials echoed their support for replicating the Jospong model:

Senator Mohamed Faki Mwinyihaj praised the job creation impact and environmental benefits of Jospong’s systems.

Farida Abdallah, Chairperson of Mombasa County Public Service Board, emphasized the model’s potential to curb unemployment.

Members of Parliament from constituencies including Likoni, Mvita, Kisauni, and Changamwe lauded the alignment of Jospong’s model with Kenya’s development agenda.

The Minister for Blue Economy, Agriculture and Livestock, and the Officer in Charge of Water and Sanitation in Mombasa County also expressed keen interest in adopting the model to suit their local needs.

A Growing Partnership

This visit marks a deepening of ties between Ghana and Kenya in the area of sustainable waste management. It builds on previous engagements, including a working visit in July by officials from Kenya’s Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

The collaboration aims to foster knowledge exchange, promote sustainable sanitation systems, and drive inclusive economic growth across the continent.
