Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been hit with a two-month ban after being found guilty of deliberately getting booked in a Serie A match as part of a betting plot.

The Udinese shot-stopper was punished by an Italian federal court. He was found to have played a role in a match-fixing scheme tied to a yellow card incident during a game against Lazio. Okoye, 25, will now miss the opening two months of the new Serie A season.

The incident took place on March 11, 2024. During an away game at Lazio, Okoye received a yellow card in the 64th minute for time-wasting. At the time, it seemed harmless.

But that moment sparked alarm in betting markets. A sudden surge of bets was placed on Okoye to be booked in that exact way. That led to an official investigation.

Investigators soon uncovered troubling links. A close friend of Okoye, who owns a pizzeria in Udine, had placed a large bet on the incident. He won over €120,000 from that single booking.

The Italian federal prosecutor’s office took over the case. They determined that Okoye was complicit in manipulating the match to favor a betting outcome. Though he faced up to four years out, the court settled on a reduced suspension.

He is now barred until October 19, 2025, and will not feature in Udinese’s early fixtures. The club has not made an official comment since the verdict.

The case has sent shockwaves through Italian football. Match-fixing has long haunted the sport, and Okoye’s involvement brings fresh concerns about betting’s growing influence.

Fans in Nigeria and beyond have expressed disappointment. Okoye, once hailed as a rising star for both club and country, now faces a tough road to repair his reputation.

This is another stark reminder that football’s integrity remains under threat. And even one moment of misconduct can carry lasting consequences.
