Ghana’s Black Queens saw their Africa Cup of Nations dream crushed in the most agonizing fashion, losing 4-2 on penalties to hosts Morocco after a gripping 1-1 draw in Rabat.

It was a night full of promise, passion, and pain. The Black Queens had taken the lead through Stella Nyamekye in the 27th minute, finishing off a rebound after Josephine Bonsu’s header was parried. Ghana had started strong and controlled the opening half with fearless pressing and sharp movement.

But Morocco fought back in the second half. A defensive lapse allowed Sakina Ouzraoui to pounce and level in the 54th minute. From then, the Atlas Lionesses controlled possession, but Ghana’s backline held firm.

As penalties loomed, nerves kicked in. Badu and Comfort Yeboah both missed from the spot. Morocco converted all four to seal their place in the final. The defeat was Ghana’s second penalty shootout in two matches, having beaten Algeria in the quarters the same way.

Head coach Kim Lars Björkegren remained proud. “We were better in the first half. I’m really proud of what the team gave,” he said. His side showed heart, composure, and structure throughout the tournament.

Stella Nyamekye, Doris Boaduwaa, and Princess Marfo all had chances to extend the lead. But Morocco’s resilience and home support proved just enough. Ghana were inches away from reaching their first final since 1998.

The Black Queens now turn to the third-place match against South Africa. It’s not the final they hoped for, but they walk away with respect, growth, and renewed hope for the future.
