Security has been significantly reinforced at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra, ahead of a planned protest by supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and members of the Minority in Parliament.

The demonstration is in response to the continued detention of former National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) CEO, Abdul-Wahab Hannan, despite reports that he has met his bail conditions.

Mr. Hannan and his wife were arrested on June 25 in connection with alleged financial misconduct. While his wife has since been granted bail amounting to GH¢30 million, he remains in EOCO custody, even after reportedly fulfilling his GH¢60 million bail requirements.

Tensions escalated on Thursday, July 3, when a group of NPP loyalists gathered outside the EOCO premises demanding Hannan’s immediate release. The protest is expected to intensify on Monday, July 7, with a broader mobilization of party supporters, MPs, and top executives planning a large-scale demonstration.

Police Barricade EOCO Offices in Anticipation of Protest

In preparation for the planned protest, police have cordoned off the EOCO premises with barricades, bolstering security to restrict entry and prevent unrest. Officers were seen early Monday morning, in pictures cited by MX24 News, increasing their presence at the scene to manage crowd control.

A call for justice and transparency

The NPP has described Mr. Hannan’s prolonged detention as unjust and politically motivated, calling on EOCO and other relevant authorities to offer a public explanation.

The party insists that his continued incarceration violates his rights and undermines confidence in the justice system.

As political tension builds, all eyes are on EOCO and the law enforcement agencies tasked with balancing security with the right to protest. Monday’s demonstration could prove a critical moment in the unfolding legal and political saga.
