In his first Sunday address as the new head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV issued a heartfelt plea to world leaders to end ongoing conflicts and work toward a “true and lasting peace.”

Speaking from the window of the Apostolic Palace overlooking St. Peter’s Square, the newly elected pontiff addressed thousands of faithful and millions watching around the world. His message, delivered on May 11, touched on some of the globe’s most pressing humanitarian crises, including the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and rising tensions in South Asia.

“I appeal with all my heart: no more war, no more hatred, no more innocent suffering,” Pope Leo XIV declared. “Let us choose the difficult but noble path of dialogue and reconciliation.”

The pope specifically called for:

A “true and lasting peace” in Ukraine, where more than two years of war have caused massive devastation and displacement.

An immediate ceasefire in Gaza, expressing that he was “deeply hurt” by the recent escalation and the toll it has taken on civilians.

Support for Saturday’s peace agreement between India and Pakistan, welcoming the accord and voicing hope for “a lasting accord that honors the dignity and aspirations of all people.”

The 88-year-old pontiff, elected earlier this month following the resignation of Pope Francis due to health concerns, has signaled a strong commitment to peacebuilding and humanitarian outreach early in his tenure.

“This world is weary of conflict,” he said. “Let us build bridges, not walls.”

Global leaders and religious figures have begun responding to the pope’s remarks, with the United Nations Secretary-General calling the appeal “a timely and moral reminder of our shared humanity.”

Pope Leo XIV is expected to continue emphasizing peace and diplomacy in the coming weeks as he meets with international representatives and religious leaders at the Vatican.
