Accra Lions kicked off the second round of the Ghana Premier League with a 1-0 win over former champions Medeama SC at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

A second-half penalty from Nigerian forward Lucky Nwafor proved to be the difference after a tightly contested first half.

The Lions were fortunate to remain level at halftime thanks to the outstanding performance of goalkeeper Daniel Afful, who made several crucial saves, including a stunning stop to deny Prince Owusu and another from Richard Dwumah.

The first half saw Accra Lions come close on a few occasions, particularly through winger Ahmed Youssif, who was sent through by David Akintunde but couldn’t finish, and again when he beat his marker but failed to hit the target.

Despite the missed opportunities, they managed to hold strong defensively.

After the break, Accra Lions increased their attacking intensity.

Youssif, a constant threat to the Medeama defense, won a penalty when his cross struck the hand of a Medeama defender.

Nwafor confidently converted the spot kick, sending the keeper the wrong way.

Medeama responded with increased pressure but struggled to break down a resolute Lions defense, with a key clearance from Issah Mohammed preventing an equalizer.

The Lions continued to create opportunities, ensuring they kept the visitors at bay while securing all three points.

This victory is a strong statement for Accra Lions as they look to build momentum in the second half of the season.

With players like Youssif providing spark and Afful standing firm in goal, the team looks well-positioned to challenge for a higher finish in the league.
