Ghana’s Black Stars returned to winning ways in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with a narrow but vital 1-0 victory over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium. Defender Alexander Djiku scored the decisive goal in front of an electric home crowd, keeping Ghana firmly on top of Group I.

The win came at a crucial moment for Otto Addo’s men. Just days earlier, Ghana stumbled in a frustrating 1-1 draw against bottom-placed Chad, a result that had left their qualification hopes in the balance. With Comoros also in pursuit after beating Central African Republic, the Black Stars knew that three points against Mali were non-negotiable.

Addo responded by making four changes to his starting XI, including recalls for Djiku, Mohammed Salisu, Thomas Partey, and debutant Kwasi Sibo. The adjustments brought much-needed solidity, though Mali, under coach Tom Saintfiet, proved difficult opponents with their compact shape and disciplined play.

Chances were scarce in the first half. Ghana’s brightest moment came when Mohammed Kudus weaved through defenders and set up Antoine Semenyo, only for the Bournemouth striker to shoot wide. At the other end, Djiku and Salisu were forced into last-ditch clearances to deny the Eagles.

The breakthrough arrived just after the restart. Jordan Ayew whipped in a corner, and Djiku reacted quickest, bundling the ball into the net in the 49th minute. The stadium erupted, with chants echoing across Accra as Ghana seized the advantage.

From there, Mali pushed forward with intensity. Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare produced several key stops, while Partey made a crucial clearance to spare his teammate’s blushes late in the game. Substitute Joseph Paintsil added fresh energy with his driving runs, but Ghana could not extend their lead.

In stoppage time, Mali appealed for a penalty after Jonas Adjetey was judged to have clipped an opponent. The referee waved play on, sparking furious protests from the visitors, and security had to escort the official off the pitch after the final whistle.

For Ghana, the relief was palpable. Djiku’s goal not only secured three points but also restored confidence at a delicate stage in the campaign. With two qualifiers left against Chad and the Central African Republic, the Black Stars remain in control of their World Cup destiny.
