In a major boost to their qualification hopes, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been awarded three points and three goals by the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) Disciplinary Committee. The decision comes after their abandoned matchday 4, 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya, scheduled for October 15 in Benina.

The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) was found guilty of breaching Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code. As a result, the match was declared lost by forfeit, with Libya losing 3-0.

The LFF has also been slapped with a $50,000 fine, payable within 60 days.

This ruling puts Nigeria on the cusp of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with two matches to spare. The Super Eagles now top Group C with 10 points from four matches, four points clear of second-placed Benin Republic. Rwanda has five points, while Libya languishes at the bottom with just one point.

To secure their spot in Morocco for the December 2025/January 2026 tournament, Nigeria needs just a win or draw against Benin Republic in Abidjan on November 14.

The abandoned match had sparked controversy after Nigeria’s team boycotted, citing safety concerns. They were left stranded at the remote Al-Abraq airport for over 22 hours. Libya’s football federation responded by accusing Nigeria’s football authorities of not cooperating on travel arrangements.
