The World Cup group stage delivered one final masterpiece on a dramatic night in Kansas City. Austria and Algeria played out a breathtaking 3-3 draw that secured both nations a place in the knockout rounds, while Iran’s hopes were crushed by a goal that arrived when almost everyone believed their ticket to the last 32 had been punched.

For a few unforgettable minutes, the story seemed destined for another twist in football history. Then came one final chapter.

The match carried extra meaning long before kick-off. Many feared the two sides would settle for the draw that suited them both, reviving memories of the infamous “Disgrace of Gijón” at the 1982 World Cup. Instead, Austria and Algeria produced a contest full of attacking intent, relentless energy, and a finish worthy of the world’s biggest stage.

Austria struck first through Marko Arnautovic after a clever pass from David Alaba. Algeria refused to panic. Rafik Belghali levelled before the break, and the Fennec Foxes grew stronger as the game wore on.

Marcel Sabitzer restored Austria’s advantage early in the second half, but Riyad Mahrez again rescued Algeria after brilliant work from Houssem Aouar. As both teams pushed for victory, the tension inside the stadium became almost unbearable.

Then came the madness.

Deep into stoppage time, Mahrez fired home his second goal of the night to give Algeria a 3-2 lead. For a brief moment, Austria looked destined for elimination, while Iran appeared to have been handed an unlikely route into the knockout stage.

The celebrations lasted barely a minute.

Ralf Rangnick’s final gamble proved inspired. Substitute Sasa Kalajdzic, on the pitch for just 61 seconds, rose highest to head home in the 96th minute and spark wild celebrations among the Austrian players and supporters. The dramatic equaliser also made Austria the first team to avoid defeat in a World Cup match after falling behind beyond the 90th minute.

Algeria manager Vladimir Petkovic was proud of his team’s spirit despite missing out on second place. “I think we showed that we wanted to win. Whatever happened, happened. In the end, this result is better for everybody,” he said.

“The match was a little crazy. It kind of went beyond the limits of everyone’s endurance. We did well to react twice after conceding a goal.”

Petkovic also urged his players to quickly shift their focus. “Let’s celebrate our qualification, let’s rest and then we will begin again for the next round.”

Austria now prepare for a heavyweight meeting with Spain, while Algeria face Switzerland. Iran, meanwhile, leave the tournament unbeaten but eliminated, a cruel reminder that football can be as unforgiving as it is unforgettable.
