British number one Jack Draper has made history by reaching his first ATP 500 final at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. The 22-year-old sensation defeated Italian Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets, 6-2 6-4, to set up a thrilling showdown with Russia’s Karen Khachanov.
Draper’s impressive victory marked his fifth break of Musetti’s serve, showcasing his dominance on the court. This win comes on the back of his stellar year, which includes reaching the US Open semi-finals in September.
“I suppose it is my biggest final yet,” Draper said, reflecting on his achievement. “I have been in 250 finals, Grand Slam semis, but to be in the final of a 500 after all the work I put in this year and the season I have had, I am incredibly grateful.”
Draper’s provisional world ranking has now soared to number 15, leapfrogging Musetti in the process. His opponent, Khachanov, secured his spot in the final by defeating second seed Alex de Minaur 6-2 6-4.
The Russian, ranked 24th in the world, is chasing his eighth ATP singles title and third of the year, following wins in Qatar and Kazakhstan.
In the semi-final, Musetti struggled early on, with unclinical forehand shots leading to three breaks of his serve in the first set. Despite a spirited fightback in the second set, Draper’s resilience paid off, as he saved three break points in the sixth game to hold.
Musetti eventually broke Draper’s serve to level the set 4-4 but was unable to capitalize on the momentum, gifting Draper the break and the win.
Draper and Musetti have clashed twice before, with the Briton emerging victorious on both occasions.
“The first set was really high-level from my side,” Draper said. “Lorenzo is a really tough competitor – I have known him since I was really young, and to play against him is always so difficult. He has had an incredible season.”
Draper’s final showdown with Khachanov promises to be an exciting encounter, with the British number one looking to claim his second ATP title this year.
