Fulham tore up the script at Craven Cottage, halting Liverpool’s charge toward the Premier League title with a thrilling 3-2 win that reignited the battle at the top and bolstered their own European ambitions.

Arne Slot’s side arrived in west London knowing a win would stretch their lead to 14 points. Instead, they left with their first away league defeat in nearly a year, undone by a 14-minute spell of calamitous defending and clinical Fulham finishing.

Alexis Mac Allister’s spectacular long-range strike gave the visitors a dream start. Moments later, though, Fulham felt aggrieved not to be awarded a penalty and they responded in style. Ryan Sessegnon levelled with a stunning volley before Alex Iwobi and Rodrigo Muniz capitalised on Liverpool’s defensive lapses.

Slot turned to his bench, and it paid partial dividends as Conor Bradley set up Luis Diaz to pull one back. But despite a frantic final 20 minutes, Fulham held their nerve. Their backline, previously shaky this season, stood tall in the face of Liverpool’s late pressure.

The result keeps Liverpool top on 73 points but offers Arsenal fresh hope. With seven games left, the Reds now need a maximum of 11 points to secure the title a task that suddenly feels less inevitable.

For Fulham, this was a statement. Just their second win over Liverpool in 14 league meetings, it lifted them to eighth, just three points behind fifth-placed Manchester City a position that could yet offer Champions League football.

Their record against table-toppers has been woeful in recent years. But this win, coupled with a draw at Anfield earlier this season, marks a shift in mindset and belief under Marco Silva.

Liverpool’s defeat also marks the end of their 12-match unbeaten away run in the Premier League, stretching back to April 2024 when Jurgen Klopp was still at the helm.
