Flamengo roared back from a goal down to claim a dramatic 3-1 victory over Chelsea in their Club World Cup Group D showdown, tightening their grip on top spot in style at Lincoln Financial Field.
Chelsea took an early lead through Pedro Neto, whose composed finish in the 9th minute capped a lively start for the Premier League side. The Blues looked in control but wasted several chances to extend their advantage, and those missed opportunities would come back to haunt them.
Flamengo emerged a different beast after the break. With intensity, composure, and purpose, the Brazilian giants flipped the script in a matter of minutes. Bruno Henrique drew them level in the 62nd minute before Danilo fired home just three minutes later to complete the turnaround.
The match turned again shortly after as Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson received a straight red for a reckless studs-up challenge, leaving his side with ten men and their momentum shattered. The dismissal opened the door wider for Flamengo, who needed no second invitation.
Former Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, now marshaling the Flamengo engine room, helped control the tempo as his side tightened their grip. With seven minutes left, Wallace Yan made it 3-1, capping a performance that blended South American flair with tactical discipline.
This was Flamengo’s second consecutive win of the tournament, leaving them with six points and top of Group D. Their progression to the knockout stage could be confirmed depending on the result between Esperance and LAFC later.
Coached by ex-Chelsea left-back Filipe Luís, Flamengo handed Chelsea a harsh reminder of what happens when chances go begging. It also marked the first time since 2000 that a South American side beat a European club by two or more goals in a FIFA competition.
Chelsea now face Esperance on Tuesday in a must-win clash. Flamengo, meanwhile, march on, brimming with belief, history on their side, and a place in the last 16 within touching distance.
