Manchester United have parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag after two and a half years in charge. The Dutchman’s final game was Sunday’s Premier League defeat to West Ham United, which left the club 14th in the table.
Ten Hag’s departure comes amid a dismal start to the season, with just three league wins from nine games and four victories in 14 matches across all competitions.
The club has confirmed Ruud van Nistelrooy, recruited in the offseason to work alongside Ten Hag, will take interim charge. The rest of the management staff will remain in position for now.
In a statement, Manchester United expressed gratitude to Ten Hag for his achievements, including winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
Ten Hag’s tenure began promisingly, with a third-place finish and Carabao Cup triumph in his first season. However, last season’s struggles domestically and in Europe, including a group-stage Champions League exit, had already raised concerns.
Despite triggering a one-year contract extension in July, United’s hierarchy, including chief executive Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth, and technical director Jason Wilcox, ultimately decided to make a change.
